How the five stages fit together
An ecommerce store grows by moving people through five connected stages. Awareness makes the right people notice you. Acquisition turns that attention into a first visit and a first customer at a cost your margins can support. Activation makes sure that visit becomes a completed first order that does not come back as a refund. Retention brings customers back for the orders that actually repay what you spent to win them. Monetization raises the profit you earn from the traffic and customers you already have.
The stages are sequential but they are not independent. Weak retention makes acquisition look expensive, because customers never repay their cost. A leaky checkout makes awareness look wasteful, because attention never converts. That is why each hub below lists the metrics for its own stage, then links to the stages on either side.
Where to start
If you are not sure which stage is holding you back, measure the outcome at each step for the last 90 days: engaged sessions, new-customer CAC, first-order conversion, second-order rate, and profit per order. The stage with the weakest number is usually the best place to start, and fixing it raises the value of everything upstream. Start with the activation hub if traffic is fine but orders are not, the acquisition hub if customers cost too much to win, or the retention hub if customers buy once and disappear. You can practice the trade-offs between stages in the Ecommerce Simulator before changing a live store.
